The Department of Mathematics, FMIPA UGM, in collaboration with Poltek Siber and Sandi Negara, held the second session of its Webinar Series titled “Current and Future Cybersecurity Challenges” as part of a community service program.

Dr. Bety began her presentation by discussing the importance of cryptography in daily life and the ever-evolving cyber threat landscape. She elaborated on various attack techniques, including phishing, smishing, vishing, malware, spyware, and ransomware.

Her main focus was on ransomware, where she explained its dangerous nature, historical development, and evolution. She categorized the types of ransomware attacks and described the methods by which ransomware infiltrates networks. Furthermore, she analyzed the impact of ransomware on companies and industries, presenting a detailed case study of the BSI ransomware attack by LockBit 3.0, which also affected Indonesia’s National Data Center. She emphasized that ransomware attacks are continuously increasing and highlighted their illegality under cybercrime regulations.
Dr. Uha centered his talk on the biggest causes of data leaks and offered solutions to prevent them. He related this to Indonesian laws on data storage and protection, stressing the legal responsibilities of institutions.

He then shifted to Indonesian cryptography algorithms, presenting a list of existing standards and their significance in safeguarding information systems. Finally, he discussed the recent updates in cryptographic methods, particularly those developed using advanced mathematical tools, and how these innovations strengthen data security against future threats.
