Lecturer : Prof. Bharath Sethuraman
Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, California State University, Northridge (USA)
Research Areas : Algebra, Algebraic Number Theory, and Algebraic Geometry
First Lecture Outline:
This introductory lecture will offer a gentle overview of algebraic geometry with minimal technical detail. Some of the guiding questions include:
• What are the main objects of study in algebraic geometry?
• When does a system of polynomial equations over ℂ have a solution?
• What is the connection between affine varieties and the ideals in ℂ[x₁,…,xₙ]?
• What is projective space, and how many intersections do two curves have there?
• What are singular points and how can we measure their ‘lack of smoothness’?
• What invariants can be attached to varieties?
• What is the Riemann–Roch theorem?
• What are elliptic curves and how are they applied?
The session will conclude with a discussion of applications of algebraic geometry.

Everyone is welcome!
