\nFirst Lecture Outline:
\nThis introductory lecture will offer a gentle overview of algebraic geometry with minimal technical detail. Some of the guiding questions include:
\n\u2022\u2060 \u2060What are the main objects of study in algebraic geometry?
\n\u2022\u2060 \u2060When does a system of polynomial equations over \u2102 have a solution?
\n\u2022\u2060 \u2060What is the connection between affine varieties and the ideals in \u2102[x\u2081,\u2026,x\u2099]?
\n\u2022\u2060 \u2060What is projective space, and how many intersections do two curves have there?
\n\u2022\u2060 \u2060What are singular points and how can we measure their ‘lack of smoothness’?
\n\u2022\u2060 \u2060What invariants can be attached to varieties?
\n\u2022\u2060 \u2060What is the Riemann\u2013Roch theorem?
\n\u2022\u2060 \u2060What are elliptic curves and how are they applied?
\nThe session will conclude with a discussion of applications of algebraic geometry.<\/p>\n
